Linux Lovers

Postby BlackSt0rm » Tue Mar 22, 2016 6:32 pm

Any other linux lovers lurking in the shadows?
I only use Windows for games these days, but I know linux is not that popular for the average user; but we are far from average are we not?
Is there any other kind of St0rm than Black?

I'm a fan of Linux, as there are so many free distributions catering for all different needs and tastes.

A few distributions that I currently have running are:
  • CentOS (Using it for My Virtual Private Servers)
  • Ubuntu (Installed on my old laptop for Quick Browsing and other stuff)
  • Kali (Installed on an USB 3.0 Drive for random stuff)
  • Raspbian (Installed on 1 of my microSD cards for my RaspberryPi 2)
  • Knoppix (Lightweight distro Installed on a VM for FIT3130 use back in the day)

Linux has a bright future and I would recommend that anyone who is interested in the Servers Field look into learning it and perhaps getting the LP1 and LP2 certifications.

What Distros are you currently using BlackSt0rm?

I've used Linux a bit in the past.

I mainly used Ubuntu (for a PC) and Raspbian (for my Raspberry Pi). I have used some other Distros but for a very limited amount of time.

I only use Debian since I run a custom kernel which I tweak to suit my own needs.

Where did you guys buy your Pi's from? I am looking to get several for myself to play around with but can't seem to find a merchant that does not look dodgy as hell....

Rolling your own custom kernel makes sense.
I haven't actually attempted this yet but might do it soon, as their is a project that I'm involved in that will require a highly streamlined and slimmed down version of Linux.

Do you have any good resources or guides as how to roll your own Linux Distro?

I bought my Rapsberry Pi from Amazon.com.
I got the following kit from them:
Vilros Raspberry Pi 2 Ultimate Starter Kit (17 Items)

Delivery from the states didn't take that long, it was quicker than expected by a week.
If you don't want to order from them their is an international company situated in SA called RS components that sell them locally with a whole bunch of other electronic stuff.

I use the debian wiki:

Code: Select all

https://wiki.debian.org/HowToRebuildAnOfficialDebianKernelPackage

and The Debian Linux Kernel Handbook:

Code: Select all

I use Linux Mint with Cinnamon on top for my Disposable VM's (Huge Ubuntu software repository without any of the drawbacks). ElementaryOS is also another project I'm very interested in seeing mature! I like my Linux installs fully fleshed out, I don't go for the streamlined stuff! Although FreeBSD seems like it could be fun.

I got my RPi from the pifactory http://pifactory.dedicated.co.za/?post_type=product
and some components from the PiShop https://www.pishop.co.za/store/

I tried to get a job at LSD technologies a while back, they are looking for postgrads! Check them out: http://www.lsd.co.za/
